Broken Chains

If you spend half as much time on a computer as I do then you know all about being chained to your desk. If you have some of the energy that I have then you’ll also know how much I dread it, as much as I miss construction it’s still better then working in complete filth and sweating or freezing depending on what the weather had in store for me. Not to mention a lot safer, when you almost die 3 times on the job it becomes a bit easier to realize.

For some people those chains have already been broken as for hard core computer folks like myself, it’ll still be awhile. With leaps in technology we’ve all seen phones transform to computers that are more powerful then what NASA used for their Apollo missions. Today we not only send information in the form of texts between them but pictures, music and even video. Office people are capable of receiving emails and with the latest popularity of Cloud spaces taking off, documents and other types of materials are available to anyone, anywhere there’s internet. Today we can use our phones to do many things like help navigate with GPS, remote controls, monitor home cameras and the list keeps on going actually. That’s not even getting into their most popular feature gaming.

The problem is speed and strength of these little devices are lacking for full blown applications or more complicated applications. Luckily the future keeps producing faster and smaller parts, along with intelligence and imaginations, humans are slowly shattering how we actually view computers. Take Google Glass for example, a mini-computer that you wear on your head like any regular glasses. It might be limited to what it can do but so was that big mainframe that took up a whole building and was not much better than a calculator. Some of its features will simply amaze you as you no longer need to search for a camera or your phone, it’s already there and all you have to do is say record and you’re keeping a memory that will be from your very own perspective.

Another pretty interesting thing is Augmented Reality which regular phones with cameras are using as well, say you’re out of town and would like to know what’s around you. Simply hold the phone’s camera up and watch the screen or if you’re wearing Google Glass just look around and you’ll see things like restaurants, friends places, department stores etc being pointed out for you right within the actual image of what you’re looking at, as if somebody overlaid a map over what you see and said this place is a Harvey’s or a Wendy’s etc. Google Glass also offers a really cool GPS feature, I’ve even heard rumours that it could be used as a lie detector as it could look for certain reactions and signs like pupil dilatation, increased breathing etc…

This is today, tomorrow new gadgets are already in the works. Screens that are like paper and can be rolled up are just around the corner or even one’s that are projected not just on a screen or wall but into your mind, new power sources that last longer and are charged faster are almost here as well. Along with advances in cellular/wireless technology the computer as we know it will no longer work or look as we think it will. It could actually resemble something as simple as a necklace but what more will you need when hard drives will be as small as nickels and will act as memory and storage for just the necessities like an operating system, powered by a dime sized battery along with cellular/wireless technology to access your files on the cloud, which will also host your programs to let you work on them. Then top it all off with mind control interaction, which might sound funny but it already exists, just currently limited in functionality.

I guess to be fare, with the title not only will the chains be broken but they’ll be completely shattered tomorrow. It’ll be pretty amazing being able to draft up your presentation while your car drives you to work or in my case be able to explain to the computer what the application is doing wrong and have it take care of it for me. It’s just a matter of time before the dream becomes reality….
