While transferring stuff from one installation to another I sought out an easy way of bringing not only my bookmarks from google chrome over but the stored passwords as well. Before it looks like I’m slamming Chrome, I’m fairly certain this can be done with almost any browser, you’ll just need to find the appropriate folder/files for it.
With Chrome you go to {463c70c279fb908728b910a090d44fbe4ae7aabcd875de9c1a518a8c8e2be8bd}system root{463c70c279fb908728b910a090d44fbe4ae7aabcd875de9c1a518a8c8e2be8bd}\users\{463c70c279fb908728b910a090d44fbe4ae7aabcd875de9c1a518a8c8e2be8bd}username{463c70c279fb908728b910a090d44fbe4ae7aabcd875de9c1a518a8c8e2be8bd}\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data and copy the whole “default” folder over to the same location of the other Chrome install.
It probably doesn’t sound like I’m slamming anyone at this point but what I’d like to add to this is that anyone that has access to your computer can obtain these files, copy them over to their computer and then login into any pages whose passwords you’ve saved to your browser. By access I’m referring to actual physical access to your computer, using third party software you can avoid having to know the windows password period and just boot up using something like Linux for example to gain access to these files and copy them.
I recommend not saving passwords to your browser at all, especially if you have mischievous kids or friends (don’t let them read this). It might be a bit of a hassle but it’s a safer one at that… If you’re fairly familiar with computers you should also disable any other boot options from the BIOS and password protect it as well, this way it’ll be harder for someone to use something like a Linux boot to get into your system.
