Growing up I watched a show Get Smart a comedy about spies that required the agents to have this clear egg like glass dome to be lowered over their heads to prevent any type of eavesdropping on the private or secretive conversations that they were supposedly having. Today not even the cone of silence would work with a leap forward in technology.
We can now take any decent quality video which might not even have you in the picture and extract sound from it. For example your sitting in your living room not visible through a window but a bag of chips sitting on your coffee table is. A computer can analyze this footage now and detect tiny differences in vibration from that bag of chips and render a decent enough sound quality for you to hear every word that was said that day.
I can’t see this technology being useful to anyone other than law enforcement or national security branches of the government. This also touches upon privacy because the question remains do they need permission to video tape a bag of chips, will this require a warrant, not to mention anyone could possibly submit video for analysis leaving privacy completely in the dark.
I guess if they ever decide to remake the show the producers will have to come up with a totally new cone of silence which would be more like a sound proof room, with no windows or cameras allowed in it…
