Don’t get fooled by the hype of tablets, articles stating that PC’s are dying off are a tad misleading…
By no means am I saying tablets are bad but examine what you’re needs are before thinking it’ll replace a PC. Articles are popping up everywhere talking about how PC sales are down and how tablets are flying off the shelves, what these articles aren’t saying is that the majority of the people buying tablets already have a PC, with clever wording they make it almost sound as if the PC has become obsolete now that tablets have arrived and this is far from the truth.
Through the use of touch screens, a camera and gyroscopes tablets are definitely a lot of fun especially when playing simplified games. These apps are not just limited to games as they can be informative or productive too and of course you can use the tablets to watch videos and play music as well.
Computers both desktops and laptops on the other hand will outperform tablets, their processors tend to be much, much faster and their storage capability compared to tablets is off the chart. The other benefit of computers is the capability of expansion adding other components to it which if available on a tablet is very limited. Things like DVD players and today’s Blue-ray players tend to come installed on a computer where with a tablet you’re lucky if you’ll be able to add an external one and chances are this will be limited to DVD as Blue-ray has a much higher quality which most tablets would not be able to render due to the lack of power of both the processor and it’s video capabilities. If you work with large size files or have something like a huge music/movie collection then you can fill up a tablet fairly quickly and unless you have somewhere to move them to like an external hard drive/SD card they’ll constantly need to be removed to make room to install new apps or to change the music/movie available on it. Your top of the line tablet comes equipped with about 64Gb (gigabytes) of space available which does hold quite a bit of information but when compared to the hard drives available in computers almost seems like a toothpick being stood up against something like the CN tower. Hard drives available for computers these days are measured in terabytes which only 1Tb is equivalent to 1024Gb, that on its own is a drastic difference but when you factor in that some of these hard drives can handle up to 6Tb then that difference became much more drastic (96x’s) and you’re average desktop computer also has room for more than one of them. The more powerful software and games are also not available on tablets, mainly due to the lack of memory and processing speed and also because of lack of availability as they were designed for different types of PC’s. So if you’re looking to do something like advanced photo/video editing chances are the tablet won’t meet your needs nor would it be able to handle multiple monitors which make working on things much easier as you can have different applications open in each of them.
Another factor to help in deciding if you should get a tablet or not is also your skill level, tablets tend to be a bit more user friendly, although they’re not that much different than their computer counter parts. Computers tend to offer many more settings which for some people can be overwhelming but what they don’t realize is just because all these extra options are available you don’t necessarily need to know about them or even utilize them as the default settings usually work just fine.
Hopefully some of this information will help especially if you’re in the position of making a first time purchase of one of these two types of devices. It doesn’t mean a tablet’s not for you just don’t make that decision based on hype….
