Mp3 is made by the Moving Picture Experts Group(MPEG), and uses a lossy compression algorithm to greatly reduce the amount of data needed to represent the audio. It will still sound high quality for most listeners. Mp3 files can be recorded at higher and lower bit rates, resulting in varied sizes for the same amount of time.
