Google Drawing

Google Drawing is a drawing or image creation application available in the Google Drive suite. It’s a simple to use tool that allows you to save images in several different formats.

Google Drawing Window

  1. To the left is the name of your current document and by clicking on the name you’ll have the opportunity to rename it. The star allows you to easily find this document which when enabled will end up in your starred folder, this is a toggle so it can be enabled or disabled with the same click. Just after that the folder allows us to save this document in a different location on the Google Drive.
  2. The menu contains all the functions available inside of Google Drawing. Beside that to the right you’ll notice that your document is either being saved or was already saved, this happens automatically.
  3. This is a shortcut to Google Drive and will open it in a new tab.
  4. This is the toolbar and will have the most important tools available to you here within one click.
  5. This is your page/canvas where you can draw/place your objects onto.
  6. If you’d like to leave comments to remind you to do something or for someone else that might be working on the file with you, you can do so by pressing this button.
  7. You can share your work with others by clicking this button, from there you’ll get a popup window allowing you to enter email addresses for those you’d like to share with or you can copy the address of the file and let people know about it that way.
  8. This will minimize the anything above the toolbar providing you with more room.

The Toolbar

  • The next two options are the left and right arrow which are your undo and redo options, if you made a mistake you can use the undo button to go back a step and the redo option to repeat the step you just undid. You can also the redo option to recreate the last step you just did as well.
  • When applying formatting to your document like bold or colour, you might like to add the same type of formatting from one part of your document to other parts. You can use the Paint Format tool for this, by placing your cursor in the text that’s formatting you’d like to copy and pressing the button you’ll then be able to drag your cursor over other text applying the same formatting to it. By clicking on the button once you’ll be able to copy over the formatting just once but by double clicking on it you’ll be able to continue to apply the formatting to any part of your document repeatedly, if you double clicked it then you’ll need to click it again to turn it off otherwise it will turn off on its own after you pasted the formatting with the one click option.
  • The next two options control zooming, the first button will zoom your document to the maximum that can fit inside of your window. The magnifying glass will allow you to zoom in using the left mouse button and zoom out with the right mouse button. You can also hold the left mouse button and outline a box in the area which you’d like to zoom in on.
  • The arrow is our selection tool, once it’s pressed we can use the mouse to select items to edit, delete or move.
  • The line appears by default but this button will change to the last tool used available from the dropdown list besides a line these include the arrow, curve, polyline, arc and scribble.
  • The next button provides us with several shapes to choose from, once we’ve picked a desired shape to draw, we simply click on the canvas and hold down the left mouse button and stretch the shape out to the desired size.
  • When you want to add text to a drawing you can do so by either typing it in a shape or by using a textbox which is what this buttons allows us to do.
  • This button is used to insert an image, which can be located on the Google Drive or uploaded from your device.
  • This another comment button same as the one mentioned before.

  • When working with text/shapes your toolbar will end up having additional tools added to it, the first one is for the fill colour.
  • The next three buttons control the outline the first button is the colour, next is the thickness of the line and last is the type of line solid, dotted etc.
  • If you’d like to use a different font then then this button will change that and the next one the size of the font you are using.
  • The next few buttons toggle on/off bold, italic, underline and colour of the selected font or if nothing selected the next text you type.
